Sittingbourne in the Swale and Medway area of Kent has historically had a low level of opportunities to participate in the arts. As one of the participating areas in the Arts Council’s Creative People and Places programme, it has created under the Ideastest brand, a suite of initiatives to stimulate interest and participation in the arts and creative industries.
Jim recently led a workshop session on portfolio careers at Sittingbourne’s Creative Job Club for young people aged 18-25 seeking to enter the creative industries. Held at No 34, Ideastest’s High Street location, half a dozen young people discussed creating their own toolbox to support a portfolio career through topics such as the importance of t-shapes in the creative industries. This helped young people identify their deep interests and specialist/skills vertically, with the horizontal ability to collaborate inter-disciplinarily across different areas and skills.
