As part of the Devonshire Collective’s Digital Drop-in series of workshops for local artists, Adventures + Wisdom Institute will be delivering a couple of afternoon sessions in the last weekend of November 2017.
Entitled InsideOutsideSeaside in VR, the workshops will be held at DC3 1-5 Seaside, Eastbourne BN22 7NA, 2-5pm on Saturday and 1-4pm Sunday, 25/26th November 2017. Both sessions will be facilitated by Jim Byford.
As the emerging immersive (VR/AR/MR) layers of the internet pose new questions about representations of place and identity – we’ll consider how we might represent community and locality in the first instance – beyond Google Earth in VR for example. We’ll play with representative artefacts, publishing our own online environments that are inside and outside, Seaside.
Artists will be able to explore the use of physical and digital media artefacts deriving from the immediate local vicinity as sounds, videos, images, 3D object files – imported and manipulated within virtual reality environments.
Tickets can be booked here online are £15 per 3 hour session or £10 for Devonshire Collective members, OAPs or unemployed. Maximum of 6 people per session.
In July 2017 we brought together a couple of really talented creative technologists with half a dozen young people currently not in employment education and training.
During the course of a week we became a studio team in order to give these young people a taste of what it’s like to work on a real creative project. Animorph kindly produced this short film about the week.

Since the event we met again socially at Mana Gaming (our wonderfully supportive hosts) and reviewed what we’d learned and what we might like to do together again.
Most of the participants felt more confident, motivated and some felt that the week had helped them technical skills and softer skills such as decision-making. One of the group has gone on to a full-time games course. All agreed that digital badges to recognise the skills used would be valuable. All also agreed that it would be great to do it again and help recruit more groups.
We might even come together again for Global GameJam in January 2018..
On Wednesday 19 July (7-11pm) we’re trialling a playful VR night with the friendly folks at Maxims Bar. It’s going to be a lot of fun and hopefully will generate some local interest, contacts and contribute towards the Gamechangers week. We’re also welcoming children 11+ accompanied by adults, £3 for 10 mins VR, £5 for a drink and the VR.. More details and sign-ups on Facebook.
